This body of work explores personal memory through constructed narrative distance. By employing characters as surrogates, Bretton creates space between lived experience and representation, allowing difficult histories to be revisited through mediated forms. The work investigates how storytelling can both shield and reveal—how meaning is encoded, displaced, and reassembled in order to be safely examined. Through this process, autobiography becomes indirect, refracted through fiction yet rooted in lived truth.
