Bretton’s series, September 2025–Present, was a monthly practice that functioned as both artwork and behavioral commitment device. Each painted calendar translated time into measurable units, with completed months and individual days marking incremental progress toward a personal goal. Informed by behavioral psychology, the work uses visible tracking to reinforce habit formation, accountability, and sustained practice.
The project also draws on Alfred Gell’s theory of art and agency, through which material objects can embody social and temporal significance. By translating intention and daily action into painted calendars, Bretton transformed ephemeral effort into a tangible record of discipline and aspiration.
The series concluded when the goal became embedded as an ongoing personal practice, no longer requiring the structure of the artwork to sustain it. The completed calendars remain as a finite record of the period in which the practice was consciously formed, connecting time, action, and reflection through the ritual of making.
